Hi Daniel and Fabian, thank you for taking the time to sit down with me and share your insights about Lucanet's dual study offer. For over a decade, we’ve been collaborating with the Berlin School of Economics and Law on their dual study program, enabling young talents to kickstart their careers with us by combining work and university studies in computer science and business informatics. Let’s dive right in:
Let’s start with a fun question. What are three things you couldn't do without?
"That’s easy – my family, being outdoors, and sports."
Daniel
"I'm with you on sports; martial arts help me clear my mind after long hours at the computer. But I also can't do without my computer itself, whether it's for work, coding, university notes, or gaming with my friends. Lastly, my motor scooter is a must; I use it almost daily."
Fabian
Tell us, when did you both join Lucanet and what is it you do here?
"I joined Lucanet in 2019 as a Senior Software Engineer, and after two years I also became a People Lead and took over responsibility for our students from our university cooperation. Over the years, I've worked on various parts of our software, primarily in the background. I spent almost two years on modern authentication features, and more recently, I've been with the ESG Software Team. Currently, I'm involved in an internal project aimed at supporting another department and preparing for our transition to a full SaaS provider."
Daniel
"I joined Lucanet three years ago as a dual student in computer science. This means I alternate between three months at university and three months at work, during which I rotate through different tech teams. I'll be finishing my studies soon and will then start as a Junior Software Engineer at Lucanet."
Fabian
You're both part of our Engineering team. How would you describe a typical workday?
"We work in project-based teams and have daily sync meetings where we discuss what we did, what we're working on, and our plans for the day. We follow a mix of SCRUM and Kanban, which allows us an agile way of working."
Daniel
"During my work phases, my day is like that of any software engineer. I mostly focus on implementing new features requested by customers. This involves modifying existing code or adding new code, which can get pretty complex. But that's the fun of it! As Daniel mentioned, our daily team meetings help all of us discuss any roadblocks and seek assistance."
Fabian
Fabian, can you tell us a bit about your journey at Lucanet so far?
So far, I've had the opportunity to work with five different teams at Lucanet, which has been great for meeting new people and understanding various parts of the company. What I really enjoy is tackling real problems; this gives me insights into how everything works and makes me feel like I’m making a real impact. I've heard from dual students at other companies who only work on fake projects for learning purposes. I think Lucanet's approach is better as it offers hands-on experience directly relevant to my future job.
Fabian
Daniel, as a mentor, why do you believe it's important for a company to offer such a program, and what do you find most rewarding?
It’s a win-win for both young talents and the company. This dual education approach, combining university studies with practical work experience while already earning your own salary, is incredibly beneficial. The company can support the student's development and secure future talent, and the student gains real work experience. Most rewarding for me is helping people, building trustful relationships, and solving problems together. Being a role model benefits everyone on the team – and me of course as I enjoy sharing my knowledge and becoming better. For Lucanet, this is a great way to find and nurture young talent, potentially transitioning them into full-time roles.
Daniel
Fabian, you’re about to graduate. Can you share the key takeaways from your dual study experience?
One key lesson was learning to be honest when I don't know something. I initially thought asking for help was bad, but it’s the opposite. No one can know everything and especially for a beginner it's key to use your colleagues' experience for your development. I’ve found that my colleagues are always willing to help without judgment. Another rewarding aspect is that by the time you graduate, you’ve already gained valuable work experience. It’s like getting a head start in your career!
Fabian
And what skills have you developed that you believe will be valuable in your future career?
I’ve strengthened my ability to collaborate and communicate with my colleagues and team. I’ve also gained a lot of programming experience, which I believe is the best way to learn. Additionally, Lucanet offers great opportunities for self-development, like access to free online courses. I even had the chance to attend the WeAreDevelopers World Congress, a major event for software developers to network and learn about the latest IT topics. This was awesome!
Fabian
Can you share with us, how do you stay motivated, even when facing challenges at work or university?
I'm automatically motivated when my company has a clear vision. Knowing that I contribute to my team and have opportunities to participate and share knowledge is everything I need.
Daniel
To be honest, I've always found studying a bit dull. So, what motivates me during those times is focusing on the bigger goal- finishing my studies and earning my Bachelor of Science. Whenever I feel unmotivated, I remind myself of the goal I'm trying to achieve.
Fabian
What makes Lucanet unique from your perspective?
The people here are always open to improvement and handle failures professionally. There's no finger-pointing. We focus on understanding and learning from mistakes rather than blaming others, which makes me proud to be part of this team and to work here.
Daniel
Absolutely! The team spirit at LucaNet is incredible. I felt particularly proud during the recent release of LucaNet 24.1, which involved a lot of hard work and collaboration. Also, it's amazing to see our company grow, especially evident during our annual Summer All Hands event where the entire company comes together to celebrate. What I love most is the freedom we have here with LucaFlex, our working model, which allows us to choose when and where we work.
Fabian
Last question. What advice would you give to someone considering a dual study program at Lucanet?
A dual study program is great for anyone who feels traditional studies aren't ideal for them. As it alternates three months of theoretical classes with three months of practical experience, which I really enjoyed. Plus, you earn a salary without needing an extra job. And Lucanet is great for young people, we have a dynamic culture, lots of freedom, and career advancement opportunities. Everyone listens to you, even if you're new. If this sounds appealing, definitely give it a try and apply at Lucanet.
Fabian
Of course, just check it out and see what we have to offer!
Daniel
Thanks, Daniel and Fabian, for the chat – I believe it’s clear that Lucanet is a good place to grow and thrive (not only) for young talents!
